Cost and budget
What is a realistic budget for a kitchen remodel in Prescott?
It depends on scope. The 2025 Cost vs. Value report put a minor kitchen remodel near $28,500 and a major mid-range remodel near $83,000 nationally, and Houzz's 2026 study found median spending of $20,000 for minor updates and $55,000 for major remodels. The cost guide breaks it down.
How much contingency should I hold back?
About 10 percent in a newer home and 15 to 20 percent in a house built before 1980, where wiring, plumbing or framing may need updates once the walls are open.
Does a kitchen remodel add value at resale?
Smaller projects recover a larger share of their cost. If you plan to sell within a few years, a refresh in the existing layout is the safer investment.
Permits and licensing
Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel?
Usually only when the work goes beyond surfaces. Moving plumbing or gas, adding circuits or removing walls generally needs one; swapping cabinets and counters in place generally does not. The permit office depends on your town or Yavapai County.
Does my remodeler need an Arizona license?
Yes. Arizona requires a Registrar of Contractors license for remodeling jobs of $1,000 or more and for any job that needs a permit. Check the license before you sign.
Who pulls the permit?
The licensed contractor applies for the permit and schedules inspections as part of the job.
Timing and living through it
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
About 2 to 4 weeks on site for a refresh, 4 to 6 weeks for new cabinets in the same layout, and 6 to 12 weeks for a full remodel, plus cabinet lead time and permit review.
Can I live at home during the remodel?
Most people do. Set up a temporary kitchen in another room with the refrigerator, a microwave and a hot plate, and plan on more takeout for a few weeks.
When is the best time of year to remodel?
Any time works in the Quad Cities. Spring and early summer book up fastest, so start planning in late winter if you want those months, or late summer to finish before the holidays.
Materials
Should I reface or replace my cabinets?
Reface or paint if the boxes are solid, dry and in a layout that works. Replace them if they are swelling, sagging or in the wrong places. See the cabinet guide.
Which countertop works best with hard water?
Quartz or a honed, lighter-colored stone. Dark polished surfaces show mineral spots the most. See the countertop guide.
What flooring holds up best in a kitchen here?
Porcelain tile and luxury vinyl plank both handle spills, dirt and dry air well. Solid hardwood can move with the seasons in our dry climate.
